Custom Profile Pultrusion Die
Custom profile pultrusion die is engineered to produce non-standard FRP cross-sections that do not fall into standard rectangular, round, or angle categories. The die shown features a complex asymmetric cavity with a central rib and side mounting flanges, designed for a specific structural or architectural application.
Die Design Process
Each custom die begins with the customer's 2D profile drawing or 3D CAD model. The die engineer analyzes the glass flow path, resin distribution, and mandrel support requirements, then designs the cavity in CAD. Critical dimensions are verified by FEA simulation to ensure the profile cures uniformly and does not deform during pulling.
Typical Custom Profiles
Window and door frames with integrated gasketing grooves.
Wall panels and facade cladding with interlocking joints.
Custom beam sections with I-beam, C-channel, or Z-shape geometry.
Profiles with mounting holes, drip edges, or insulation channels.
Architectural sunshade and louvre profiles.
Manufacturing
The die is CNC-machined from P20 or H13 tool steel, with the cavity wire-cut or milled to the exact profile shape. Internal mandrels form any hollow sections. Heating cartridges are placed to maintain uniform temperature across the asymmetric cross-section. The die is bench-tested and try-out on the pultrusion line before delivery.
Applications
Custom FRP profiles serve architectural facades, corrosive process equipment supports, cooling tower structural members, marine decking, and railway platform edges. The corrosion resistance and lightweight nature of FRP make custom profiles an attractive alternative to aluminium or steel in demanding environments.
Conclusion
A custom profile pultrusion die translates a specific design requirement into a repeatable industrial process. The design phase is critical — a well-engineered die produces dimensionally accurate profiles at high line speed, while a poorly designed die causes poor surface finish, uneven glass distribution, and frequent breakage.
