SMC and FRP Compression Molding: Design Guidelines for Parts

Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) and Bulk Molding Compound (BMC) compression molding are the most efficient ways to produce high-volume, complex-shaped FRP parts with excellent surface finish. From electrical boxes to truck body panels, manhole covers to bathroom units, SMC parts combine light weight, corrosion resistance, dimensional stability and low tooling cost. This guide explains the process and the design rules that prevent defects.
The Compression Molding Process
SMC is a ready-to-mold sheet of glass fiber, polyester resin, fillers and additives. A charge of SMC is placed into a heated metal mold (150-160°C), then pressed under high pressure (5-15 MPa) for 1-5 minutes. The part cures fully in the mold and is ejected ready for trimming. Cycle time, material flow and temperature control determine part consistency.
Typical Mechanical Properties
| Property | Typical SMC Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | 60-120 MPa |
| Flexural Strength | 120-200 MPa |
| Flexural Modulus | 8-15 GPa |
| Density | 1.8-2.0 g/cm³ |
| Heat Deflection Temp. | 200-240°C |
| Flame Retardancy | UL94 V-0 (available) |
Design Rules for SMC Parts
Wall thickness should be 2.5-4 mm for small parts, up to 8 mm for structural parts. Uniform wall thickness prevents sink marks and uneven curing. Use generous radii (minimum R1) instead of sharp corners, and taper walls with a draft angle of 1-2 degrees for easy ejection. Ribs should be 60-80% of the wall thickness to avoid sink. Inserts (brass, steel) can be molded in but must be positioned so resin flow does not push them out of alignment.
Surface Finish and Painting
Class A SMC uses low-profile resin systems that give a smooth, paintable surface. Standard SMC is gray and can be left unpainted, gel-coated, or painted for outdoor UV resistance. For electrical enclosures, black or RAL colors are common; manhole covers are usually black or gray and can be customized with logos.
Typical Applications
Common SMC parts include electrical switchgear cabinets, meter boxes, manhole covers, truck and bus body panels, bath tubs, shower trays, antenna radomes and automotive structural components. SMC is also widely used for FRP doors and windows frames in corrosive coastal environments.
Tooling and Production
Molds are usually made from tool steel and are durable for 100,000+ shots. Lead time for a new mold is typically 30-45 days. Minimum order quantities are lower than for injection-molded thermoplastics, and the process is ideal for batches of a few hundred to tens of thousands of parts. Hebei Jinyang Environmental Protection Equipment Co., Ltd. designs and produces SMC and FRP molded parts to customer drawings and samples, with full material certificates.
Conclusion
SMC compression molding offers an excellent balance of strength, corrosion resistance, surface finish and cost for medium-to-high volume parts. Following basic design rules on wall thickness, radii and draft angles keeps tooling and parts economical.
