How Should FRP Products Be Installed and Maintained?

FRP products are designed for decades of service, but correct installation and a simple maintenance routine are essential. Below are the key rules that apply to most of our FRP equipment.

General Handling

• Lift by the designated lifting lugs, never by nozzles or handrails.

• Store on flat supports, off the ground, out of direct sunlight if wrapped.

• Do not drop, drag or strike FRP against steel or concrete edges.

Tanks and Vessels

Set on a flat, level concrete or sand foundation free of sharp stones. Fill the tank with water at the same time as backfilling (for underground tanks) to prevent floatation. Check the vent and vacuum relief before commissioning. Inspect the inner surface, flange tightness and foundation once a year.

Pipes and Fittings

Support pipes on saddles every 2-3 m and at every fitting. Leave expansion loops in long straight runs. Use diagonal bolt torque on flanges. Hydrotest at 1.5 times working pressure before commissioning. Do not weld near FRP piping.

Gratings and Pultruded Profiles

Secure panels with FRP clamps, never weld. Seal cut edges with resin. Keep supports at the design span; do not over-load with forklifts or vehicle traffic unless the grating is rated for it.

Electrical Equipment (Gates, Pump Stations)

Keep power cables in separate conduits. Test pump rotation, float switches and alarm functions before automatic operation. Clean the pump impeller annually. Lubricate the gate actuator per the manufacturer's schedule. In cold climates, install a heater in the control box to prevent condensation.

Routine Maintenance Summary

FRP itself does not rust or rot. With this simple routine, most equipment will exceed its design life.
