Should I Choose Polyester or Vinyl Ester Resin for My FRP Project?

This is one of the most common questions we receive. Resin selection decides whether an FRP product lasts 30 years or fails within a few. The simple rule: polyester is enough for mild service; vinyl ester is worth the extra cost for aggressive chemicals and higher temperatures.
When Polyester Resin Is Enough
Orthophthalic and isophthalic polyester resins are suitable for:
Cold and hot water storage, drinking water, swimming pools
Sewage, effluent and domestic wastewater
General outdoor and atmospheric exposure
Temperatures below 60°C, pH 5-9
Polyester is economical, easy to process, and fully adequate for most municipal and water projects.
When Vinyl Ester Is Required
Choose vinyl ester resin when the medium or service is more severe:
Strong acids (HCl, H₂SO₄), alkalis (NaOH), solvents
Chlorides, brine, desalination and coastal immersion
Higher temperatures, typically 80-120°C
Where long service life and minimal maintenance are critical
Vinyl ester has better hydrolysis resistance and lower blistering, but costs 30-60% more than polyester.
Quick Decision Table
| Service | Recommended Resin |
|---|---|
| Cold water, domestic use | Polyester |
| Sewage, effluent | Polyester (iso) |
| Acid / alkali, pH <3 or >11 | Vinyl ester |
| Brine / seawater, >60°C | Vinyl ester |
| Solvents, oxidizing chemicals | Special resin (consult us) |
If you are unsure, send us the stored medium, concentration and temperature. We will recommend the correct resin and laminate schedule.
