FRP Fan and Blower for Corrosive Air Handling

Centrifugal fans and axial fans handling corrosive exhaust, acid mist, or solvent-laden air fail quickly when built in coated steel or aluminium. FRP (glassfiber reinforced plastic) fans are engineered specifically for this duty. This article outlines how FRP fans are constructed and what to specify.
Construction
The impeller, housing, and inlet cone are molded from corrosion-resistant resin (usually vinyl ester for acid fume, polypropylene- or PVC-coated for milder service). The shaft remains steel but is sheathed in FRP in the wetted section. Bearings and motor are mounted outside the airstream on a steel frame.
Key Selection Parameters
Air volume and total pressure: match the system resistance calculated from ductwork, filters, and scrubber.
Temperature: most FRP fans are rated up to 80 °C; high-temperature versions require phenolic or modified vinyl ester.
Materials of construction: specify the resin grade and the glass type; E-glass is standard, C-glass or vinyl ester is used for stronger acid exposure.
Speed and impeller material: verify that the impeller is statically and dynamically balanced for the operating speed.
Installation and Safety
Support the fan independently of the ductwork; use flexible connectors at inlet and outlet. Ensure rotation direction matches the arrow on the housing. For explosion-hazard areas, request anti-static FRP and grounding straps. Guard couplings and pulleys according to local safety rules.
Maintenance
Inspect the impeller annually for buildup, erosion, or cracking behind the blades. Clean deposits gently with water or a non-abrasive detergent; high-pressure washing can erode the gel coat. Re-balance the impeller after any repair or blade replacement.
Conclusion
FRP fans deliver reliable service in corrosive exhaust systems when the resin, temperature rating, and system resistance are matched correctly. Poor material selection is the most common reason for early failure.
