FRP Grating Anti-Slip and Safety Applications

FRP molded and pultruded grating is widely used for walkways, stair treads, trench covers, and platform flooring where corrosion, slip, or weight is a concern. Its non-conductive surface, light weight, and corrosion resistance make it a practical alternative to steel and aluminium grating. This article explains how to specify anti-slip FRP grating for safe industrial flooring.
Why Anti-Slip FRP Grating
Corrosion resistance in chemical plants, wastewater treatment, and coastal facilities where steel rusts quickly.
Non-sparking and non-conductive properties for electrical substations and explosive atmosphere zones.
Light weight: roughly one quarter the weight of steel grating, reducing structural load and easing installation.
Low maintenance: no painting or galvanizing touch-up over the life of the platform.
Slip-Resistant Surface Options
A gritted surface (silica quartz or carbide particles embedded in the top veil) improves grip in wet, oily, or icy conditions. Smooth-surface grating is acceptable only for dry indoor access walkways. For stair nosings, use a contrasting color grit band so the edge is visible.
Load and Span Selection
Select bar size and mesh according to the required live load and the unsupported span between steel supports. Standard pedestrian grating typically carries 5 kN/m²; heavy-duty industrial or forklift traffic requires deeper bars and shorter spans. Always verify deflection under load; excessive deflection feels unsafe even if it does not break.
Installation and Edge Finishing
Clamp panels to steel supports with stainless steel clips at every bearing point. Cut edges must be sealed with resin to prevent water ingress and fiber exposure. Add a toe plate where the platform edge is unprotected.
Conclusion
Anti-slip FRP grating improves safety in corrosive and wet environments. Specify the grit surface, correct bar depth, and proper clipping details to get long-term service.
