FRP Pipe Installation and Jointing Best Practices

FRP pipe delivers excellent corrosion resistance at low weight, but its long-term performance depends heavily on correct installation. Support spacing, joint preparation, and alignment errors are the most common causes of leaks in filament-wound FRP piping. This guide covers the field practices that installers should follow.

Trench and Bedding

Bury FRP pipe in sand or finely graded backfill with no sharp stones. The trench bottom must be flat; unstable soil should be replaced with compacted bedding at least 100 mm thick. Bedding and haunching must be compacted in layers to avoid point loads on the pipe wall.

Jointing Methods

  • Adhesive (butt-and-wrap) joints: prepare the spigot and socket by sanding and solvent wiping; apply the mixed resin and glass tape according to the joint schedule; allow full cure before pressure testing.

  • Flanged joints: use a full-face gasket, align bolt holes, and torque bolts diagonally in at least three passes to the specified value.

  • Mechanical couplings: verify that the coupling type is rated for the working pressure and that the shear ring is seated correctly.

Supports and Expansion

Space pipe supports according to the diameter and fluid temperature; FRP pipe is stiffer than PVC but more flexible than steel. Provide expansion loops or bellows where the temperature swing exceeds 30 °C. Do not weld steel attachments directly to FRP.

Pressure Testing

Flush the line, then hydrostatically test at 1.5 times the working pressure for at least one hour. Isolate the test section with blind flanges and monitor pressure decay before filling with process fluid.

Conclusion

Careful bedding, clean joint preparation, and a proper hydrotest prevent most FRP piping leaks. A documented installation record should be handed over with the project.
