FRP Tank Inspection and Maintenance Checklist

Regular inspection is the single most cost-effective way to extend the service life of a glassfiber reinforced plastic (FRP) tank. A structured monthly and annual checklist catches corrosion barrier damage, foundation settlement, and fitting leaks before they become structural failures. This guide outlines the inspection points that plant operators, maintenance engineers, and tank owners should follow.

Monthly Visual Inspection

  • Walk around the tank and look for surface blistering, whitening, gel coat cracks, or discoloration that indicates resin enrichment loss.

  • Check the nozzle, flange, and joint areas for weeping, wet marks, or salt-like deposits around bolt holes.

  • Inspect the foundation for uneven settlement, cracks in the concrete plinth, or bulging around the tank wall base.

  • Verify that the vent, overflow, and drain lines are open and free of blockage.

Annual Inspection

  • Spark test the corrosion barrier at low voltage to detect pinholes or porosity in the internal liner.

  • Measure wall thickness at the most exposed zones (liquid level line, bottom corner, nozzle regions) using an ultrasonic gauge.

  • Check the torque of flange bolts according to the schedule supplied with the tank; retorque after the first month of service.

  • Inspect external supports, ladders, platforms, and railings for delamination or bolt loosening.

Maintenance Best Practices

Keep the tank exterior clean to allow visual inspection; avoid storing corrosive chemicals directly against the wall. Repair small gel coat scratches with a matching resin patch as soon as they are found. Do not pressure-wash the tank at close range, as high-pressure water can force liquid into minor surface voids. For tanks storing hazardous media, keep a spill kit and eye-wash station within reach.

Conclusion

A simple monthly walk-around combined with an annual thickness and spark test program will keep an FRP tank in service for 20 years or more. Record every inspection so that trends can be compared year over year.
